I understand that the police walk a fine line. I understand the terrible toll it takes on them. I understand the temptations, the desire for money, for power, even for justice, that make them want to cross that line. So, what did everyone else do this evening?

I went for a long walk and looked in on a friend of a friend.

Back in Baltimore, there was a great cop bar called the Waterfront, which was owned by a few cops I knew.  Cheap beer, decent liquor and a convenient location, plus the company of people who deal with the same stuff that you do all day -- you can't beat that.   In Takoma Park, there was Ace's, the very cheesy sports pub which made up for its kitsch ( Read more... )

I'm a big fan of the book. Without it there is really no point in any of us doing our jobs, is there? Those rules are there to keep us from turning into a bunch of armed thugs taking what we want from a frightened populace.
